Earth Prayer
Hey! Learn to hear my feeble voice.
At the center of the sacred hoop
You have said that I should make the tree to bloom. With tears running, O Great Spirit, my Grandfather, with running eyes I must say the tree has never bloomed. Here I stand, and the tree is withered. Again, I recall the great vision you gave me. It may be that some little root of the sacred tree still lives. Nourish it then that it may leaf
And bloom and fill with singing birds!
Hear me, that the people may once again find the good road and the shielding tree. - Black Elk
Pawnee Eagle Prayer
Oh Eagle, come with wings outspread in sunny skies. Oh Eagle, come and bring us peace, thy gentle peace.
Oh Eagle, come and give new life to us who pray. Remember the circle of the sky, the stars, and the brown eagle,
the great life of the Sun, the young within the nest. Remember the sacredness of things. Native American - World Healing Prayers

Though the length and duration of the pathway is uncertain, the love and intent of THE CREATOR is constant and sure
(Chaplain Michael L. Benedict)
Oh, only for so short a while you have loaned us to each other, because we take form in your act of drawing us, and we take life in your painting us, and we breathe in your singing us. But only for so short a while have you loaned us to each other. Because even a drawing cut in obsidian fades, and the green feathers, the crown feathers, of the Quetzal bird lose their color, and even the sounds of the waterfall die out in the dry season. So, we too, because only for a short while have you loaned us to each other. - Aztec Indian Prayer
I Give You This One Thought
I give you this one thought to keep: I am with you still – I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, the diamond glints on snow, the sunlight on ripened grain, and the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not think of me as gone – I am with you still – in each new dawn."
Native American Blessing for When Parting
May the sun bring you new energy by day; may the moon softly restore you by night; may the rain wash away your worries, may the breeze blow new strength into your being, may you walk gently through the world and know its beauty all the days of your life.
Native American Prayers (livinghour.org)
Hold on to what is good even if it is a handful of earth. Hold on to what you believe even if it is a tree which stands by itself. Hold on to what you must do even if it is a long way from here. Hold on to life even when it is easier letting go. Hold on to my hand even when I have gone away from you.

Great Spirit Prayer
Oh, Great Spirit, Whose voice I hear in the winds and whose breath gives life to all the world. Hear me! I need your strength and wisdom.. Let me walk in beauty, and make my eyes ever hold the red and purple sunset. Make my hands respect the things you have made and my ears sharp to hear your voice. Make me wise so that I may understand the things you have taught my people. Let me learn the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock.
Help me remain calm and strong in the
face of all that comes towards me.
Help me find compassion without
empathy overwhelming me.
I seek strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy: myself. Make me always ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes. So when life fades, as the fading sunset, my spirit may come to you without shame.

Zamar (Song Of Praise)
My HEAVENLY CREATOR is My DEVOTED MASTER.
(Chaplain Michael L. Benedict)
With grateful heart and spirit, I sing and express my thanks to HIM for walking with me. With restored might and mind, I come to HIM in my hour of meditation.
With humble soul and uplifted voice, I sing my Song of Prayer to HIM.
HE invites me to come to HIS Tree Of Healing, which is HIS Tree Of Life.
It is here that I find a place for Reflection and Meditation, a time of Preparation for that which awaits me.
It is here that I partake of The Desirable Fruit Of Spiritual Awakening.
It is here that I partake of The Fruit Of Recovery and Healing —
Body, Mind, Spirit, Heart And Soul.
HE invites me to surrender to HIM, my burden of my self-doubt.
HE assures me that I will Discover an ability to achieve the things that
I never knew were possible – until now.
HE invites me to surrender to HIM, my burden of unsure footsteps,
which like My Faith, are still new.
HE assures me that I will never be left to decide for myself which way is best.
HE invites me to surrender to HIM, my burden of despair that comes
from my own insecurity.
HE assures me that I do not need to be insecure or unsure of myself,
because HE is always at my side.
HE invites me to surrender to HIM, my burden of guilt for things that were long ago forgiven.
HE assures me that HE will help me to resolve any ‘unfinished business’
regarding my past.
HE invites me to surrender to HIM, my burden of shame for the person
that I think I have become.
HE assures me that I am capable of becoming so much more.
HE invites me to surrender to HIM, my burden of removing myself from HIS presence.
HE assures me that HE will remain with me as I call upon HIM and prepare
to receive HIS presence.
Selah (Refrain And Pause For Reflection)
This is my moment to pause and reflect upon the portion of HIM that lives within me. Like branches of a tree that reach upward toward The Sun above, I am nurtured in the warmth and light of THE SON OF GOD, which rests upon me and within me. HE is THE TREE OF LIFE, of which I am a branch.
For I am created at HIS hand and in HIS image. HE touches my heart and lifts my spirit, that my soul may also bear fruit that is delicious and desirable.
All is given through the Generosity of HIS Hand. It is here that I partake of The Fruit Of Healing. HE gives me HIS Guiding Presence on My Spiritual Journey.

-Empowerment
(Chaplain Michael L. Benedict)
I seek My CREATOR and MASTER. HE is My TREE OF LIFE.
No longer are the days of feeling abandoned.
I run with HIM, that I might be ever near HIS side — never again to feel a restless heart and soul.
I run with HIM, that HE will show me A Change In Course, Direction, Destiny. No longer do I wander, my direction unsure.
HE places me upon a course that is steadfast and sure. HE invites me to come, take hold of HIS rod and staff, that I may discover the richness of HIS hope for me.
Dear One, I am always present, ever near, always and forever, without end... ...to watch upon and over you, ever to gently lead.
...to tenderly protect you, ever to preserve you as a sheep of My fold.

I have been running - too hard, too long, too far - my way uncertain.
HE comes to me in my hour of Reflection.
My Course and Destination are of a Spiritual Awakening.
I am led upon roadways straight, across meadows fair and green, past forest trees where valleys lay, beyond mountain lakes and streams.
On My Spiritual Journey, I find rest and peace.
The trail upon which I walk is a panorama of the handicraft of Creation.
HE invites me to come, take hold of HIS rod and staff, that I may be led to and comforted in HIS house forevermore.
HE Raises Me Through The Mission Of HIS Salvation...
...Recovery and Healing Through HIS Restoration and Renewal.
...Hope Through Trust And Faith In HIM.
...Peace And Calm Through The Warmth Of HIS Presence.
…Abundance And Richness Of Charity Through HIS Pure Love.
...Forgiveness Through HIS Justice And Mercy.
...Prayerful Confession Through Humility And Accountability.
The trail that lies before extends beyond expanse of time. A light breaks through the pounding storm, the parting of a veil. I am assured winds will subside, the tempest will be stilled.
HE raises me through HIS redemption and wholeness. Dark clouds join with swirling winds, tree limbs and branches bend, uniting through ensuing storms, ‘til clouds have left at last.
Destination…
...knowing that I am an expression of HIS Love.
...knowing that I can become an expression of love for HIM.
...knowing that I can express HIS Love in my expression of love for others.
...knowing that HIS love is unlimited, conditional, unending.

A Guiding Presence From My CREATOR and MASTER
(Chaplain Michael L. Benedict)
I seek My CREATOR and MASTER. HE is My TREE OF LIFE.
HE is My All, My everything,
I come unto and call upon HIM in the same way that HE comes unto me - with love and devotion.
HIS love for me - perfect, whole, unending, abundant.
I seek that my love for HIM would be like that of a child – total, complete, pure, innocent.
The richness of HIS Abundance is beyond my ability to fully receive.
Still, I strive to accept the fullness of all that HE desires. I receive from HIM, a dream restored, a life made whole.
I give to HIM a grateful heart, a thankful soul. My gratitude extends throughout ‘all the days of my life’ – inadequate and incomplete though my effort to express may be.
HIS Richness exceeds my expression of thanksgiving. It is through HIM that I discover the things that I felt beyond my grasp have been there all along. It is for me to ask HIM to show me The Way.
Too much and not enough…
...too much of my trying to go it alone, my pride being among my greatest obstacles.
...too much hesitance to call upon HIM, to invite HIM to walk at my side..
..not enough to fill the void brought about by seeking fulfillment in the wrong places.
...not enough to satisfy an appetite for that which has little meaning.
Too much and not enough…
...too much standing out in the cold – separated, isolated, apart.
...too much refusing the invitation to accept that love which is still awaiting. ...not enough to describe a desperate sense of longing.
...not enough to describe a deep yearning to belong. My CREATOR, THE GREAT FATHER comes to me.I come to HIM, my spirit to be restored, my soul to be renewed.HE comes to me, to bless and to heal...
...to bless with an assurance that a way has been prepare.
...to bless with an awareness that there is one to hear the desires of the heart. ...to heal every wound, scar and broken heart.
...to heal as only HE can, as only HE might and as only as HE would, when called upon.
My desire from HIM, HIS desire for me — that I will ask, that HE will abide. Always to be heard, my prayer becomes more than an expression of yearning need, of want and desire.
It becomes a prayer that...
...My CREATOR, THE GREAT FATHER will be always near my side.
...I will feel of an unconditional love and unending presence.
...I will be watched over, my trail taking me only to places where I truly ought to go.
With HIS gentleness and love, HE walks beside me.
With HIS total concern for my well-being, My Spiritual Journey becomes one of Peace.
With HIS tender affection and never to forsake me, I am shown a better way through HIS Guiding Presence.
We hear our calls, one to another.
One is a plea, the other an invitation.
In prayer, my voice is raised…
Hear my plea, in my hour of enslavement and hopelessness.
heal me from the scars of –
guilt, sorrow, squalor, depression, self-centeredness and the agony of temptation that leads to the destruction of hope and dreams.
From a voice that is still and quiet, I am given the blessing of a promise and the promise of a blessing…
Your soul is bought at great a price, a ransom paid from My life. A heavenly realm you soon will see, give now your trembling heart unto me.
From scars of flesh and broken heart, you are doubtful now of your worth. The road on which you once walked has robbed you of your dignity, held you from your nobility. As in darkness, your lost voice cried, from within the shadows of darkest nights. Through my toil and strain you have been brought when my voice in prayer was sought.
Dearest Child, My love for you, a never ending source of light .Never to be lost on your forward path, I shall guide and keep you with my staff. Though now you seem, far from home, a distant path you roam.
Come to Me, that I may guide. I will come to be your Light. Walk with Me, your soul to raise, your wounded life to mend. I hear your call, your fervent prayer, know of your anguished plea for care.
I am but a prayer away, from dawn through end of day. I wait on you to call on me, that I may set you free. There is no need for fear or doubt, for my Hope rises with the clouds. May you come to seek My peaceful ways.
For my way and will is meek. My Hope for you – supply your need, fulfill your soul, touch to make you whole. My Love for you – it knows no end. I am your CREATOR/TEACHER.
I will give you My Guiding Presence. Abide with Me. Abide in Me, that I may give unto you My Haven...
...a calm, safe place of Recovery And Healing, Restoration And Renewal.
...a shelter from the storm and seething cold, blanketed in my abiding warmth, protected from the shadow by my ever-present light.
Never to be lost on your forward path, I shall guide and keep you.
My Spiritual Journey is a Prayer of Gratitude for all that I have, all that I am, all that I have overcome all that I will become — through HIS Healing, Restitution, Renewal and Reconciliation.

There is beauty in overcoming moments of temptation and weakness by relying upon personal faith and belief, however expressed.
(Chaplain Michael L. Benedict)
Certain angels have joined me on my journey. I have come to value my relationships with them as precious treasures. Gramma Ferrell became a planter of seeds – of faith, of an awareness of the world around me, of the influence that one person can have in the life of another, even if the two persons have never met.
>Gramma Ferrell
Gramma Ferrell came into my life in the Fall of 1960. For the next 18 years, she would instill in me an understanding of the need for an anchor of faith in meeting life’s personal struggles while living in an uncertain world. As the events in the world and the nation unfolded, she would walk with me along the path of late childhood and into adolescence. Since her husband had long since passed on, she sought to fill the void in her life by making a pilgrimage to the homes of her three children. In a way, she sensed that I too, was missing her husband, my grandfather, who had passed on several years before my birth.
A surprise was bound to be coming with her. It might be a key ring, a puzzle, or better yet, a five-dollar bill that could be spent any way an eight-year-old could think of. During the holiday season of 1963, she placed a large package under the Christmas Tree which was marked for her adoring grandson. Three items were found in the package when it was opened on Christmas morning.
Each of these presents made a deep impression on my life, because of an event which had happened in Dallas, Texas, just four weeks before. The gifts included remembrances of JFK: a picture puzzle; a picture of him seated in his rocking chair, a scale replica of The White House. Through the holidays, Grandma Ferrell assisted in the piecing together of the puzzle and the two models.
Working on the projects with her included counsel from her that was not fully understood or appreciated until long after her death, just ten years later. I remember her telling me that, “On November 22nd, two people crossed paths with one another, both of whom chose to make a difference. One was a wonderful, Young President who chose to remind us that on this earth, ‘God's work must truly be our own’. The other chose to make a difference by ending the life of this Young president, denying him the opportunity to carry out his dreams. Always, Michael – choose to be on the side of right. Remember that your life can make a difference in the lives of others."
Grandma Ferrell always made sure a plate of cookies and a glass of milk were on the table for an evening snack. Such became an evening sacrament of sorts for an elderly woman and an impressionable young boy — which might well be remembered as "a communion of kindred spirits". To this day, even into middle age, my day concludes with a tall glass of cold milk and four chocolate chip cookies, as if to be reminded of her counsel: seek to make a difference. I always toast my grandmother and silently pledge to strive to remain true to her counsel. Together, the difference in our years were bridged as we became witnesses to the divisiveness which was growing in the world at large and in my relationship between a self-aggrandizing stepfather and my mother who sought for nothing more than a secure marriage and home-life for herself and her children. In the face of the uncertainty of the world and in my home, I became witness to the increasing alcoholism of a stepfather and older sister.
The summer of 1968 was especially traumatic. A beloved civil rights leader had been slain by yet another assassin, while hundreds of young soldiers died in a war in a far off place which had scarcely been heard of. Such were the events and images which had been placed in the volume of the life of an impressionable young boy who was on the threshold of adolescence. I had become withdrawn and isolated.
A speech impediment from childhood continued to taunt me, as did my peers. Junior High brought about a clumsiness that also led to further ostracism. Many classmates and some teachers shared in the making jeering remarks, often to the delight of a step-0sister who taught at the very same school.
Grandma Ferrell encouraged me with a reminder that it is only if one abandons to despair that Hope ceases to exist. It was she who spawned my first interest in writing. On weekends, she pulled out her writing tablet. She created a pattern of flowing swirls that reflected her elegant, homespun eloquence. While I 'honed my craft', she also wrote post-cards to her other grandchildren in Idaho and Maryland. After stamping the final postcard, she expressed her readiness to head down to the corner mailbox. Instructing her "apprentice" to hold the box open, she asked me to read the names of each intended recipient, in order to make sure no one had been forgotten. She told me, "You have family you haven't even met, who live at places you haven't been to yet. You'll meet them someday. When you do, it will be like you have known them all along. After all, that's what being a family should really be about."
Standing at the corner mailbox with Grandma Ferrell provided a chance to feel genuine love- unlimited and unconditional. When we prepared to make our way back home, she reminded me, "Don't forget where home is and who it is who loves you.”
The summer of 1968 was spent in contemplation of the world in which I was growing up. I recalled the lives of decent men and women who had offered themselves on the altar of sacrifice for the sake of their beliefs and principles and those who had died in the jungles of Southeast Asia for a cause that no one seemed quite sure of. Gramma Ferrell recited her perspective that just as I was growing up during an era of assassination, riots and political corruption, she had witnessed an era of tyrants who sought to deprive mankind of their basic rights.
She offered a reminder that basic human dignity can never be taken away, though others might seek to impose their will. She reminded me that people, perhaps unknown to each other, might make a lasting difference in each other's lives, for good or for bad. Once again, she challenged me to choose to make a difference for the better. Now that I have arrived at the age that she was when she made he mark upon my life, I look back upon my journey, including how I have spent my life in the service of others. I like to think that I have followed her counsel and that my efforts to help other people have made a positive difference and that I would have her approval.
She offered me a challenge, "Michael, find out where your roots really are. Remember that, no matter what someone else in a family may or may not do, you must be the one to find those roots for yourself and nurture your branch of the family tree. Your branch has grown outward from the trunk. If you do nothing else with your life, you and your generation can bring about the healing. It may not happen for many years. But make yourself ready. You are my oldest grandson. You have the responsibility to see that this happens in the next generation."
She offered me another challenge, "Michael, find out where your roots really are. Remember that, no matter what someone else in a family may or may not do, you must be the one to find those roots for yourself and nurture your branch of the family tree. Your branch has grown outward from the trunk. If you do nothing else with your life, you and your generation can bring about healing. It may not happen for many years. But make yourself ready. You are my oldest grandson. You have the responsibility to see that this happens in the next generation."
Soon after that conversation, Grandma started packing, as she had at the end of her other visits. Her departures were always like her arrivals — unexpected, unannounced, yet somehow anticipated. She requested a ride to the bus depot so she could to Utah to see her grandchildren at Salt Lake City. my mom offered an invitation for her to stay a few more weeks, but Grandma Ferrell declined, “I've been here for a while and I don’t want to wear out my welcome"
My mom reminded Grandma that she always had a place to stay if she ever decided to come back. Her response, "next time I'm in town, I'll look you up." When it came time to board, she placed her arm around me and kissed my forehead. Her stubbled upper lip tickled, but her kisses still felt like those of a guardian angel who would always be watching over me. She picked up her suitcase and headed toward the bus. She turned around for one last look. Neither of us said a thing. We just stood there looking at each other. Then she got on and took a seat by a window. Like in other departures, we waved at each other until the bus had driven out of sight. That particular departure was our final good-bye. She passed on not long after.
I was saddened at the potential loss of the lady with whom I shared The Evening Communion of Cookies and Milk. I would miss the afternoon checker games. She told me how proud she was of me, but expressed her confidence that I would be successful in anything I set out to do. Perhaps GOD does work through the lives of others. I cherish the memory of that final hug, as well as the final present that she sent for my high school graduation: a pair of etched pictures of The Savior- one in Gethsemane and the other as The Good Shepherd. I have placed them next to the mementos of JFK. Every time I look upon these gifts from her, I long for both all of them, for I felt that they were taken from me too soon. But I also recall the words of JFK that Gramma Ferrell instilled in me – ‘…here on earth, GOD’s work must truly be our own…’
Before I go to bed at night, I usually pour three glasses of milk and place some Chocolate Chip and Oreo Cookies on a plate to share with my wife and son. As we do so, I offer a silent toast to her, “Gramma, thanks for your counsel and the example you set for all of us by the way that you loved us and the way that you lived your life. I am trying to do the same. When I hopefully get to Heaven, I will be sure to look you up."

>Vicki, My Mommy
The greatest gift of Vicki, My Mommy was that of herself- a simple expression of Unending Hope and Love. Much of what we become in this life can be credited to the influence of a kind and gentle mother. She is still a treasure to enrich each life, though she is long past gone. I offer these two compositions in tribute of her and the impact that she had upon my life. The following, God's Treasure is a lyric to a composition which Vicki wrote for her mother, my Gramma Ferrell. The nest selection, entitled, Sojourn is one of my compositions for Vicki, shortly before her death on Easter weekend of 1994. It was performed at he funeral.
>GOD's Treasure
GOD gave the gift of Mother, a Light From Heaven Above. Healing in hours of sorrow, thru gentle labors of love. Mother's touch softly gladdens souls that are burdened with care. Cheering hearts when saddened in moments of deep despair. A life of selfless loving, she has given to all, With tender hands outreaching, protecting us from each fall. Her prayers though silent are pleading and raised to heaven on high.
In moments of our needing she lives to bless each life. GOD-like virtues of meekness, humility lifts her soul. Filling each life with completeness, her toil worn hands keep us whole. The lines of age have deepened sweet Hope and Love in her face. Inspiring thru example, she softens each heart with grace.
A treasure beyond measure, pearl beyond great price, assuring words she whispers, her willing sacrifice. Her life is a reflection of all things wholesome and good. Her hand still reaches to guide us, to our home to live with GOD. Seasons of life now passing the summer of new found love. Tender Young children about her, teaching with kindness and grace. Circle of seasons expanding, still children draw unto her. Faces eager reflecting, innocence without age. Her loving arms invite them, as in seasons not long ago. Though winter shadows are falling, her love is a light for all. May all of our ambitions be filled with our gratitude-The priceless gift of Mother and a way of life that's good.
> Sojourn
There is a place beside a hill – roses and daisies bloom, a tender place of peaceful rest, birds sing a joyful tune. On a hillside free from care, a soft and gentle breeze stirs the field of daffodils, fills the heart with peace.
On the hillside, I will rest, gain pace and calm sublime, the hill lies at Heaven’s Gate, where HE will place HIS hand in mine. HE calls to me and draws me near, in my hand a fragrant bloom. I lay a rose down at HIS feet, my heart and soul renewed.
Aside the hill, HE beckons me, in the warmth of HIS love. From toil and care I am set free, as the lighting of a dove. HE has prepared a place for me, far from my worldly cares, at the gate of eternity, rich blessings HE will share. I am weary, worn — my journey long, a lifetime though has been, I know HIS voice, I yield HIS call, return to rest with HIM. No more am I a traveler on an uneven road. With faith and joy, I heed the call to return and rest with GOD.

>For My Own, Who Made Me Hers
Certain angels have joined me on my journey. I have come to value my relationships with them as precious treasures.
My Beloved, Judith Ann taught me of the intimacy of faith in a common GOD, a common affection and a common commitment. Now, as the years have passed, I look back and respect the treasure of time – gone all too fast.
Yet, here we are, still standing on the threshold of a new adventure.Hand-in-hand they walk, each stride in unison and laced with the romantic bantering of two who have been joined by mutual affection and common commitment.
They break their clasp long enough to pass through a door. She enters first, waits for him to come in. Once again, she stretches forth her hand, places her palm in his. Though the years pass before their very eyes, our elders they teach us that each passing day is an adventure to be savored.
They share their faith, they offer their love- to each other and to those about them. Perhaps that is where the greatest strength of love lies- within the hearts of those who share.
Send her flowers, simply because, see the magic, a phone call does.Simple, small things, done for your bride, make all the difference. You'll see it in her eyes. Hold her close as the day begins, kiss her forehead, embrace again. Loving moments, need not be few, be like young lovers, a heart that's free and true. Not a mansion, money, she wants to share your time. To you she gives her heart, she wants to share your life. She is waiting, and hoping. Come home to her, she waits for you, she's been hoping, the whole day through. Do you love her? Is she your girl? Show her and make her, the center of your world. She has loved you, and held you dear, filled your longings and calmed your fears. When she's sleeping, you're in her dreams, in the daytime you are the center of her world. She is waiting and hoping. Worth the sharing, day after year. Worth the caring, one who is near. Ceaseless giving, straight from the heart, a love unending, each day a brand new start. Friends and lovers, steadfast and pure, join your hands when life seems unsure. Walk together, always as one, two hearts together are at the center of the world. Don't you dare forget her or the vow you made. She is the fragrant flower in your bouquet. She is waiting and hoping, for love and for you. A source of peace in weakest hours, renewed strength, enduring power. A reprieve of peace in nights of pain, a burden lifted, a souls embrace. A loving GOD drawing in, to cleanse, forgive the deepest sin. Words not spoken, still lift praise, extol HIS Blessed, Holy Name.
Though unexpressed, still prayers are heard, with grace, a need again assured, Raising hearts to ONE DIVINE, joining in Eternal Life. Their lives have come full circle. It was in the season of youth that they joined hands and hearts. Their bond widened to include family, friends and faith. Their very lives have become an expression of love through simple acts of kindness.
They drew strength from one another and through a faith that was shared. They freely offered ourselves to country and community for we know that the choice to live came not by chance. They were always there for each other and for any who would call upon them. Now, at Twilight, they are there for each other, as always. Their time now is to reflect upon their journey and to renew our feelings, one for another. They are in love, for love is in them.
You are my twilight overhead, you are my light by day, By you I have been safely led, when I might have gone astray. Your warmth has kept me comforted in nights that would be cold. In days of youth I have been kept, though we are growing old. You have freely blessed me, have given me your life. Though it oft did test me, you never left my side. Ceaseless lover unending, beyond the span of time. Though life's path was bending, with hills enough to climb. A bond of love to share is ours, a gift as from beyond. High above the shining stars, GOD looks upon us all. Our voice and hearts we join in song, our joy we cannot hide. For love and joy forever more cannot be denied. Love is given for us to share, a gift as from beyond, To bind our pain, make light our cares, give peace for which we long. Love will burn brighter as it is shared. No one will walk in darkness, for no one will walk alone. All may come to realize that the light of love is a gift which may unite us. What cherished joy we have come to share, a tender loving bond. The love we hold so fast, so dear, a gift as from beyond. We will meet each other there, another place and time. Recall the love, the joy we shared in this our mortal life. A bond of love to share is ours, a gift as from beyond. High above the shining stars, GOD looks upon us all.Two hands still held, two hearts still joined. Though years have quickly passed, how soon they've gone. Still I have you and dreams that we've held fast. We never are too old to dream, reflect on days gone by. For more than lasting memories, each day is in your eyes. Angels all are tending, descending from on high.
Quiet grace are rendering, a blessing on our lives. Reaching ever upward, the golden sun at dawn, arms reach out to hold me, to keep me lest I fall. In your dear face, I see my life, my Joy, my Hope, my Love. Now Twilight comes, the evening light, draws down from heaven above. So take my hand, sit near my side, in The Twilight of our lives. We are content and free from strife, we share a love that binds.
The setting sun of our lives, when evening gently comes. You hold me through the night, and shelter me 'til dawn. In days of joy and sorrow, you give your heart to me, today and through tomorrow, and through eternity. Love will burn brighter as it is shared. No one will walk in darkness, for no one will walk alone. All may come to realize that the light of love is a gift which may unite us.
Love will burn brighter as it is shared. No one will walk in darkness, for no one will walk alone. All may come to realize that the light of love is a gift which may unite us.

>The KIVA Of Love
The later years may be of challenge and struggle. The infirmities of age hasten a desire to live in a higher realm. It is with Hope that our elders endure. It is with faith that their longings are transformed to an affirmation that they have not been forgotten and that their yearnings are but for a moment.
Glenna married my step father shortly after the passing of my mother. Delores had been married to my biological father, James Hutton, who passed on before I had an opportunity to meet him. However, both of these kind women did much to fill the void that I had carried with me through the passing of both of my natural parents.
Like Gramma Ferrell, they taught me the value of each relationships and to always cherish moments spent together. Though they have also passed on, I offer the following tribute. May we all find a moment to express appreciation and devotion for those who leave a positive impact, as Fellow Travelers upon our Spiritual Journey.
>The KIVA Of Love
A Song For Three Ladies In Their Autumn Years - Ferrell, Glenna & Deloris (My Rescuers)
Coming to The Twilight years, a faith in GOD quiets fear. Though faces now, with lines run deep, trust still keeps,
lifts the soul in peace, serenity.
The faith of age, transcending time, abiding faith still keeps, a lasting peace divine. Not to touch, but to feel, the soul to lift the heart to heal. Beyond a jewel that has great price, adorns each human life. Though not bought, faith is acquired, seasons in refiners fires. Though not earned, faith still is gained, retrieved from giving it away. Though born of heart, faith lifts the soul, restoring, healing, making whole.
The heart of trust, the hand of GOD, guiding as the light of dawn. The night of tears, the sting of toil, softened from abiding faith. The perfect gift from On High - faith given, shared, turns dark to light. Hope abides, the weak made strong, throughout the life, with Hope prolonged. In simple faith, we walk with GOD, a lasting strength, eternal bond –
joining hands, a heart renewed, the source of Hope, Trust, Faith and Truth.
HIS hands gently guide me and show me the way. HE protects me and keeps me through each passing day. HE will show the horizon and far distant shore,
Where blessings are waiting for I will endure. My journey continues, My ship travels on. With HIM I will find rest on The Shore with GOD. I know HE will defend me from danger and harm.
In HIS arms I will feel safe, sheltered and warm. HE is my strength and my beacon, my ever sure guide.
My journey continues, my ship travels on. With HIM I will find rest on The Shore with GOD.
What is love?
Is it a feeling of tenderness as we treat each other with kindness, acceptance
and understanding?
Is it a comforting reassurance that is found as we whisper soft words of encouragement and affection to those who are nearby?
Is it a strength that is gained from a reminder that, despite our imperfections
and differences, we are all joined, united in a common destiny?
Is it a childlike innocence which is portrayed in tender acts of charity?
Such is The KIVA Of Love.
Where is love?
Is it found in the face of one who is told that they have not been forgotten,
when they feel abandoned by family and friends?
Is it shown in an offering of sacrifice on behalf of those unknown, that the dreams of another might come to pass?
Is it felt in the heart of a newborn babe who is held by one who stands at the opposite end of the path of years?
Is it given by one who, though slowed by the advent of autumn, knows that the chill of winter will come all too soon?
Such is The KIVA Of Love.
Where is love?
Might it be felt in each heart, though it cannot be touched by hand?
Might it be seen in the countenance of one who shows compassion and in the face of one who has received?
Might it be achieved by tearing down the walls which divide?
Might it be gained by building bridges which unite? Might it be present when all realize that a common bond transcends generation,
culture and dialect?
Such is The KIVA Of Love.
Love must be given away to be kept.
It is born in the heart and nourished by the hand.
It is found as it is given.
It is given as an experience and not merely felt as an emotion.
It is more than an expression of sentiment.
Such is The KIVA Of Love.
Love is the flame that may enlighten the whole of humanity.
It is the flame of heritage, as sure as the sun that greets each new day.
It is the a gift of legacy, as the evening shadows fall.
It is an endowment, given for all us to partake and then to pass on.
Such is The KIVA Of Love.
Love is more than a feeling, more than an experience of life. Love is life itself.
Such is The KIVA Of Love.

The hours of waiting and wondering, while holding vigil in a family visitation area of any hospital, for any reason are long and exhausting as anyone who has been in such a setting for a period of time will agree.
During her hospitalization, Judith Ann spent the better part of a month in the Cardiac Critical Care Unit. She had been placed in an induced coma to keep a better control of her circulation and respiration, following her episode in the emergency room.
My vigil often included an occasional nap in that waiting area, especially when the area was quiet and a couch was available. At the entryway, was a table. On it, an assortment of chips, pretzels, candy bars and fruit. Beverages included an assortment of juices and soft drinks. On the table was a note, written that read as follows:
“A year ago, we had a loved one who was experiencing a crisis similar to the ordeal that you and a loved one may be going through now. The year before we were here, someone else had left an assortment of goodies. We are following through on what we hope will be a tradition. Next year it will be your turn to offer your support to someone else who is going through a similar challenge. For now, enjoy these snacks. Hopefully, this will help you in the days ahead.”
The note was not signed. But one afternoon, I made arrangements for dietary department to make sure the visiting area was stocked with food items during the period of Christmas and New Years. I left a similar note. We really are in all of this together.

My Spiritual Journey is one of...
…Empowerment through an inner peace and assurance
that HE will walk ever at my side.
…Independence from the captivity of self-destruction.
…Choice to be made whole.
…Hope Through Trust and Faith in HIM that I might become a friend unto myself.
…Vision for a new journey, to look beyond the moment and to the inner self to discover my potential.
…Healing through the Restoration of Body, Mind and Soul.
…Restoration O Heart And Hope Through Trust And Faith In HIM.
…Reconciliation of Relationships.
…Courage to change self as well as circumstance, to make amends and enjoy a Rebirth of Personal Freedom.
…Family through learning from the past, celebrating the present
and embracing a new future with new outcomes; united in purpose as bonds intertwine and which are strengthened through unconditional love for self,
others and for HIM.
My weaknesses become my strengths.
HE witnesses to me that all things may begin anew...
…searching to remain on the path that lies ahead.
…moving past the mistakes of the past and learning from them.
… understanding the journey is as glorious as the destination.
…discovering individual worth is constant and limitless.
…learning that Faith, Family And Friends are all that really matter.
…realizing the Healing includes reaching out to those who have been injured.
…recognizing that personal conflict is often the result of personal selfishness.
…recognizing heartfelt repentance begins with heartfelt humility.
I find Faith in knowing that HE is always at my side.
It is possible for me to regain Faith after it seems to have faded.
It is also possible for me to Discover Faith for the very first time.
I Obtain Faith in knowing that it is possible to regain that which has become lost in my life and for my soul to be recovered and restored.
I am totally honest with myself in acknowledging my shortcomings and weaknesses.
Prayerful Confession, Humility And Accountability are expressions of Mutual Concern and Responsibility — each of which give me the Faith Of Inspiration and Inner Strength.
Accountability is a sharing of My Spiritual Journey with HIM and with My Fellow Travelers. With them and from HIM, I partake of these fruits
and the wholeness that they give me.
HE teaches us that each are based upon mutual trust for each other
and a sacred respect for the burdens that we have carried, for the experiences that we share and the wisdom that we have gained.
Each step ahead is a crossroad that offers an invitation to travel
through unknown terrain.
My Spiritual Journey extends through seasons of storm, wind, blizzard, rain and heat. The seasons, like the journey, include moments and venues of rest, reflection and recollection. I come to understand that I am one with the surroundings in which the journey has unfolded.
The Summit of My Spiritual Journey meets the horizon. Long and distant is the journey winding upon a course to undertake on steep terrain while winds oft beat upon the face. Occasions of affliction are reflected upon as moments of realization that the guarantee of a safe journey is through dependence upon HIM. I look upon my adversity in the same way I look toward the trees that lie atop the crest of distant mountains.

An Expression Of Love For
My GREAT FATHER
(Chaplain Michael L. Benedict)
No matter how difficult the journey, how deep the wound or painful the injury,
the burden of suffering is lightened and the process of Healing,
Recovery is complete through thoughtful and positive reflection and gratitude for blessings HE gives me.
I express my gratitude to HIM for the Forgiveness that HE gives to me.
I cannot imagine even a part of the pain
that HE endured on my behalf, to make that Forgiveness possible.
I express my gratitude to HIM for the teachers who expressed confidence in my ability to develop talents and skills –
they are my mentors.
I express my gratitude to HIM for those who are my adversaries. It is from them that I learn how I might become a better individual, through Forgiveness.
I express my gratitude to HIM for the
blessing of education and vocational training, which have provided
a means of self-reliance and an opportunity to serve others.
I express my gratitude to HIM for the sacrifice of others, on the streets and on the battlefields. Their blood has often been the currency paid for my freedom and safety.
I express my gratitude to HIM for the gift of humor, which, though ‘off the wall’ according to most, has been a source of pleasure in the face of a day that would be otherwise boring.
I express my gratitude to HIM for being guided from a road that would have led to alcoholism, had I remained upon the course that I was headed.
I express my gratitude to HIM for acts of kindness offered by others (not always known). Such acts are a source of comfort as well as assurance that I will not be forgotten.
I express my gratitude to HIM for holidays and celebrations that provide an opportunity to gather with loved ones, while reflecting on blessings given.
I express my gratitude to HIM for being led onto a path of serving others. Service helps me channel my energy in a positive direction.
I express my gratitude to HIM for the steadiness of a marriage that has kept me grounded through years of struggle, challenge, difficulty, fulfillment.
I express my gratitude to HIM for my heritage and that which has been passed down by those who have gone before. Such a heritage adds to the mosaic of who I am, of what has been given and what I am capable of achieving.
I express my gratitude to HIM for a mother who joined hands with HIS. Together, they walked through the
valley of shadows to bring me into the world.
I express my gratitude to HIM for the assurance that there will always be an outstretched hand to guide me in this life and to bring me safely home in the next.
I express my gratitude to HIM for the drama of nature, its seasons, landscapes, weather patterns, all of which bear witness that Creation of HIS presence and might.
I express my gratitude to HIM for critters who have been companions along the way, for their very presence is a source of pleasure and joy.
I express my gratitude to HIM for an acceptance of HIS presence and a learning of HIS desire to lift, cleanse and heal.
I express my gratitude to HIM for the peace that will be found through submission to HIS power to heal and renew.
I express my gratitude to HIM for HIS guidance in helping me to make the right Choices.
I express my gratitude to HIM for HIS vision to show me the potential that is mine to do good.
I express my gratitude to HIM for learning, as if for the very first time, of HIS mercy and HIS that I may emerge from the difficult valley of cleansing with a new purity.
I express my gratitude to HIM that HE offers HIS Blessing Of Endurance.
I express my gratitude to HIM for being the coach as I seek to be the runner, to the runner and the coach.
I express my gratitude to HIM for the once fallen who seeks to walk and run again.
I express my gratitude to HIM for the therapist and the one striving for rehabilitation.

HE offers HIS Blessing Of Recovery and Choice to Develop Positive Anger Management/Coping Skills.
My deepest anguish is in the hour of having removed myself from His presence. Faith becomes mine as I place myself in HIS Keeping. He awaits, prepared to offer me HIS Rich Abundance. I come to HIM in fervent prayer, that I might prepare to receive. HE heralds my arrival to the throne of majesty, expresses welcome with a fullness of love. Mine becomes an Expression of Thanksgiving, a Fullness of Gratitude. In quiet reverence, my head bows with knee — confessing, acknowledging HIM as my essence of meaningful living.
HE loves, accepts, cleanses and uplifts me.
HE awaits, prepared to lead, to guide.
HE awaits, prepared to offer me an abundance upon My Spiritual Journey.
How deep the piercing to my soul, should it turn itself away from the light of deliverance: the eye of the spirit blind to sharp rocks and briar thorns which wait unseen, laying in wait to obstruct the journey.
What cost paid in my departure from the sacred, holy path, leading instead to stumble upon strange roads, away from the warmth of light.
Will I fall prey to the enticements of the unknown, becoming captive to a course which leads ever downward?
O, that my answer might be a resounding, “No!”
Instead, I overcome moments of weakness and shame for past mistakes. It is in holding on to guilt and shame that I shackle myself from the freedom of moving toward a better way for myself and for those who may join me on My Spiritual Journey.
It is through HIM that I will emerge from the shadows and into the light, ready to meet the challenges of each day and the patience to overcome my weaknesses.
It is through HIM that I will become a reflection of one who is made in HIS Image.
My Spiritual Journey leads through vistas, deserts and byways. Lakes, rivers and streams join with limitless dreams for what might be.
Though once far off, the summit nears, inviting rest from the fear and past uncertainty, but which now lies behind. Shadows linger into nightfall, through the advent of stars and moonlight from above, remaining through the cycle of the night.
The sun emerges, casting aside the shadows of night, resurrecting that which has died to that which begins anew.
Through each day of My Spiritual Journey, my life is changed. My Spiritual Journey becomes one of never-ending praise of to HIM, in declaration that...
…I am one with HIM as HE is one with me.
… we may always be united, never to part one from another.
…I am one who has been created in HIS image and who has been re-created and through HIS Love and Desire for me: through an inner peace and assurance that HE will walk ever at my side.
…my soul shall be turned toward the ever-sure direction of HIS Will for me.

>An Expression Of My Love For HIM
I praise HIM for the Independence that HE gives me to become a new and better person. I emerge from the ashes of my former self, to portray the magnificence of HIS Creation. The song that I sing to HIM, whether polished or out of tune, is accepted by HIM as music to HIS ears.
Becoming aware of the Independence that I receive when I invite HIM to join me. Knowing that I can look to HIM for help when I experience temptation.
HIS Assurance that there is no limit to the time that I may come to HIM
or spend with HIM.
The Understanding HE gives me, that though the refining process may be painful, the end result will be worthwhile.
HIS refining process will help me to...
...develop the Independence that I need to make better Choices.
...take ownership for my mistakes, turning them over to HIM, then moving on.
...praise HIS Wisdom that HE always has my best interest at heart.
I am thankful for HIS desire to better prepare me for all that lies ahead.
I am grateful for the confirmation that I receive that my waiting for an answer to prayer is not from HIS desire punish me.
HIS is a desire that I become totally Dependent upon HIM. Though HE has given me the challenge to strive for perfection, HE does not expect me to do so without HIS help. I come to look upon my craving and dependency, my challenges and struggles, If untreated or unresolved, may become like a serious infection that may damage my body, mind, spirit and soul as well as my relationships. I seek HIS guidance that Recovery And Healing, Restoration And Renewal may begin.
I prepare to make room for HIM in my heart as well as in my home. For HE has a place for me in HIS heart and in HIS Kingdom.
To recognize my weaknesses and the lack of control that I have regarding my struggle is not a sign of weakness.
Such a recognition is a sign of dependence upon and Faith in HIM
for strength and guidance. To do so will allow them the opportunity to help me become Independent from
what has held me back and to explore new, exciting opportunities.
I remind myself that I am Independent to make Choices that will invite HIS presence.
I seek to bring the same kindness into the life of someone else, that someone once brought into my life. It is through supporting one another that we remain Independent. I look to exchange the wasted energy that has been brought about from and because of my addictive behavior, for endeavors that are worthwhile and uplifting.
Each day, I try to make a firm commitment to a routine that includes activities that keep me Independent from poor habits of the past. I strive to bring where I want to be in my Recovery and Healing, in line with where HE wants me to be and what HE wants me to become.
I strive to place my fear and hesitance over to HIM, that HE might bring about a mighty change in my heart and soul.
I recognize that when HE commanded that Forgiveness be given seventy times seven. Self-Forgiveness is to be included.
I listen to the cry of my spirit and soul when temptation seeks to harm my body and mind. I hear HIS cry in moments of temptation that HE may intervene in helping to make a Choice that will enable me to become and remain Independent.
I recognize each source of temptation and each source of inspiration. For I am Independent to make a Choice that will result in a good outcome. I recognize that I have little if any idea as to the influence that I may have upon another person in their quest to become Independent from their own struggles.
It is for me to step forward to help them as someone has helped me.
Just as there is strength in numbers, there is also Independence
in being united with each other.
I hold reverence for HIM for sustaining me through HIS Spiritual Abundance though my worldly wealth may seem to be lacking. I praise HIM for the Empowerment that HE gives me to set a new and better course for myself.
I express my gratitude that HE gives me the Empowerment of an Eagle. I may rise above my self-doubt and lack of confidence to claim a new place upon HIS horizon. I look toward the summit that lies ahead, I think of what can be accomplished on My Spiritual Journey.
Often, both will be difficult and sometimes painful. Yet, I will emerge with strength of character, with a firm resolve to avoid a return to the dark places in which I was ensnared. At the top of the mountain, I see the forever that is about me. I see the eternity that is within me. The air that I breathe is clear, clean and pure.
So too is my Vision of self-awareness – clear in its perspective, clean from its blemishes, purified as I have turned from my old ways. It is HE who elevates me toward this magnificent summit and all of its grandeur. My time of rest will be brief for HE challenges me to prepare for yet another adventure. Onward we travel, the two of us, together, never to be separated from each other, by HIS will and by my Choice. I am humbled by the assurance that HE always stands beside me to teach me, to pray for me, to bless me. Never does HE turn me away. May I never turn away from HIM.
HE gives me an understanding that my Journey begins when I accept all that HE does for me. HE has given me HIS Life as well as HIS Desire. HIS is a Desire that I become as HE is by receiving all that awaits me. HIS is the Desire that I become as HE is by sharing all of what HE has given me with those who like me, are struggling. I do so, not out of a commandment but from an effort to help others to live a life that is as full of the same Love that HE gives to me. Together, we embrace one another as HE embraces us.
I look to set aside my craving and dependency, for a recognition that all of the Praise and Glory might be given to HIM, who is the source of all that is good.
I rejoice that I will never be a refugee in HIS Kingdom, where there are no boundaries. There are only divisions between what HE would have me do and what might take me from HIS Better Road. In HIS Kingdom, I am not a stranger or foreigner, but a fellow citizen. HE seeks to become united with me. I seek that I will become united HIM. I rejoice that HE gives me the Empowerment of the Butterfly. I emerge from my cocoon as a new creature. No longer am I surrounded by temptation and the filthy enticements of a corrupt world.
HE brings purity into my life and to my surroundings. I cast aside my feelings of isolation, loneliness and fear of rejection through total Prayerful Confession, Humility and Accountability, not only of wrongs that I have committed, but of an expressed need for HIS Intervention. I allow myself the time that I need to Heal, asking HIM and others to give me the help that I need to do so. I accept HIS Life as an inspiration to become honest and sincere about my Recovery – be it of a day, of a week, of a month or of a lifetime. For me, today is the first day of Recovery as yesterday was, as tomorrow will be. My Journey will unfold one day and one step at a time.
I accept the serious results of my poor Choices and developing a desire to make a genuine, long lasting change. I also accept HIS desire to show me how to go about making that change.
I praise HIM for the Choice that HE gives me to leave the past behind, to look upon an exciting present and a future that is full of new possibilities. I am grateful that HE gives me the Choice to become as a Sparrow. My song is among those to be heard at the beginning of each new day.
I Choose the Surrender and Submission of my will to HIS and the Desire that HE has for me.
It is through doing so that I express my Faith in HIM, while becoming aware of His Faith in me.
For HE knows me far better than I know myself. I seek to make my body of flesh and bone a worthy home in which my spirit and soul may dwell, that HIS Spirit and Influence may feel welcome to abide.
I cherish the sweetness of HIS presence with me, I Choose to avoid entering into places which HE would have me avoid. These places are like strange roads that lead through a mist of darkness. These places are like great and spacious buildings that appear inviting on the outside but are hollow on the inside.
Instead, HE seeks for me to partake of the Desirable Fruit from HIS Tree of Life.
I seek HIS blessing in my effort to travel in the right direction and in a good way.
I seek for and welcome our presence with each other. We look forward to the next part of The Spiritual Journey. It is mine to Choose to invite HIM to lead me.
HE guides and protects, for HE knows the path ahead as HE knows me –
my Heart, my Needs, my Wants, my Hopes, by putting my Faith and Trust in HIM.
I dedicate a portion of the things with which HE has blessed me, back to HIM for HIS purposes. As HE looks upon me as a sacred expression of HIS Love, I look to HIM as a sacred source of HIS Love. We become united in that Love for one another, venturing
together – as if to be a Father and Child. HIS is a Fullness of Hope to show me all that is and all that may be. Mine is a growing Hope, of all that I am and of all that I may become.
Together we continue upon The Spiritual Journey – its length without end, much like the love that we share together. I make the Choice to avoid the spiritual laziness that would bring about slothfulness in moments that may become empty and unproductive. I am grateful that HE awakens me from a spiritual slumber that takes place in hours of self-neglect.
I heed HIS call for me to pursue those things that are of HIS Kingdom, rather than those things that are of but a moment. I praise HIM for the Hope that HE gives me to know that HE prepares a better way for me. I express my gratitude to HIM, that HE gives me the Hope of a Swallow. Through the rest of sleep, HE brings me to a Resurrection, as if through the Renewal of Spring.
I look to taking time for quiet moments that we may share a silent conversation together.
We listen to one another, though no words are spoken. For this is the Language of The Spirit, a language that brings about Hope. I find rest in HIM when I am weary and heavy laden.
I know that HE will ease my yoke and lighten my burden, when we come to each other.
I am comforted in the assurance that though my pain may always be present,
HE remains with me that I might endure. Gratitude is mine to know that, in the face of tragedy, HE will stand firm in HIS Love and Compassion for me and for those I love.
I express gratitude for the steady calmness that HE offers, even in the face of a world that burns, floods and quakes around me and in front of me.
I learn that as HE stretches my Faith, my Trust in HIM will be strengthened – as I accept HIS will for me.
I acquire a spiritual maturity through Hope Through Trust and Faith in HIM, to keep the child-like virtues of Innocence, Trust and Purity. For these virtues were with HIM from the hours of HIS birth in Meekness, Tenderness and Gentleness.
May these virtues be become mine.
I seek to submit to the total, complete and permanent power of HIS Cleansing, Purifying and Healing which brings about a Recovery and Hope that is equal to HIS Love – without end.
I strive to allow myself to experience HIS miracle of Hope, though I may feel unworthy. For it is through this miracle that I am lifted from all that has been a burden and a source of agony.
For it is through HIS taking my pain upon HIMSELF that HE takes me as HIS own.
HE gives me the Hope that comes from Fortitude and Inner-strength, when I am faced with the crisis of an unexpected disaster or tragedy.

>Gifts Given At HIS Hand
An Expression Of Love For Myself
(Chaplain Michael L. Benedict)
Having become free of the shackle of craving and dependency, that was brought about in part from my challenges and struggles. I am prepared to make a positive contribution in a cause that is worthwhile, including that of my Recovery and Healing.
I seek to set aside my pride and stubbornness to recognize the concern that others have for me.
To do so will allow them the opportunity to help me become Independent from what has held me back and to explore new, exciting opportunities.
I listen to the cry of my spirit and soul when temptation seeks to harm my body and mind.I hear HIS cry in moments of temptation that HE may intervene in helping to make a Choice that will enable me to become and remain Independent.
Just as there is strength in numbers, there is also Independence in being united with each other.
With HIS Divine Guidance, I seek to bring others to an awareness of HIS desire to become their REDEEMER as HE is mine. I ask for HIS help in that I might not be led into temptation, but delivered from the enslavement of my bad habits.
I ask for HIS help in shedding myself of the filth to which I have exposed myself when I have made Choices that are not wholesome or clean. These are Choices that should never be made in the first place. I ask HIM to help me become and remain clean and pure.
I ask for HIS help in feeling worthy of the Forgiveness that HE is prepared to give me.
I ask for HIS help in feeling worthy of Self-Forgiveness and Forgiveness from others. I ask for HIS Grace in realizing the need for the Forgiveness of others.
I learn that the Choice to ask for HIS Forgiveness is to ask for the Blessing of HIS Grace.
HE guides me to know that hatred does not bring about justice for something that someone has done to hurt me. Such a feeling will only fan a flame that comes from of resentment which, if not contained, will become as a wildfire – destroying everything in its path.
I seek to forgive someone else, even they may not know that I have done so.
I am the person who will be free from the burden of holding a grudge.
I look to find positive qualities, traits and characteristics that HE has given me.
I allow myself to come out of the shadow of isolation so others can join with HIM in helping me to begin My Spiritual Journey Of Discovery And Change.
I recognize a bad habit, making a plan to stop and making a commitment to follow through. Never to be satisfied with the price of mediocrity, I make a commitment instead to invest my time and energy for something that is worthwhile. I seek to surrounding myself with people who have a positive interest in and an ability and desire to help me find Rest through HIS Recovery And Healing, HIS Restoration And Renewal.
I recognize the fragile nature of life and of my spirit, as does HE. HE recognizes my need for HIS strengthening presence, as do I. I honor HIM that HE gives me the Hope to become as the Lamb. Through HIS birth, life death and resurrection, I am given the very best of an example to follow as I walk upon the path that lies before me.
HE looks after HIS flock, gathering in one who might wander from HIS fold – one like me.
I admit my mistakes to those who need to know about them so they can help me to make things right. It is through asking for HIS help together, that we discover Hope through HIM. I strive to feed my desires, appetites and passions in the way that HE has intended.
I understand that when I give in to my weaknesses does not mean I should give up. I still ask for HIS help in gaining strength and self-discipline, for the present and for the future. I know I do not need to hurt myself to soften my pain, for HE is there to take it from me. I listen to a prompting that I might be making a Choice that will take me to a place of darkness and shadows instead of to a place of Hope.
I seek to follow through on the right promptings that I may continue to travel on the right path. I accept the gift of crying as a way to release sorrow and to express joy. I accept the results of poor Choices and developing a desire to make a genuine lasting change which will bring about Hope for myself and for the persons who are important to me.
I accept the concern that someone might express regarding the place that I am at and the situation that I am in.
I look to seclude myself when a time of Reflection, Meditation and Prayer is needed, but not for the purpose of cutting myself off from HIM or from those who care and understand.
I treasure the assurance that HE lifts me up when I fall. No matter how rugged the terrain, how steep the path, no matter how exhausting the course, how deep the valley – HE guides me, protects me, remains at my side. HIS Love For Me, like My Spiritual Journey, is endless.
I invite HIM to become my confidant, my trusted companion, my dearest friend.
From our everlasting bond, I feel a sense of HIS presence – everywhere I go, in everything I do.
Whether they stand alone along the mountaintop or if they stand in clusters, the trees are firmly rooted, so as to withstand the extremes of altitude, storm and wind. Inspired by their perseverance, I wonder if there are other trees on the other side of the mountain, its terrain unseen to my eye. When I feel overcome by the difficulty of My Spiritual Journey, I look to those trees and remain committed to reaching the summit, that I may see the grandeur of what lies ahead.
That opportunity will come in its own due course. For now, the moment forbids me. I am reminded to embrace the beauty of this place upon the landscape, for all of what I witness is like a splendid mural that never ends. My heart, spirit and soul reunite with the righteousness of HIS Holiness – as to renew a common bond.
I discover that all has been given enables me to bless the lives of those about me. It is HE who helps me to discover the possibilities that await. I take the first step toward pursuing these possibilities by placing My Faith and Trust in HIM. After all, HE has placed HIS Faith and Trust in me. My song I raise, my strain of praise lifts from within my heart to HIM. HE is THE CREATOR and MASTER of earth, moon, and stars, through all my days, lifted from within my soul.
My song is to HIM, for HE keeps me whole. Mine is a verse from of praise that unites in the Chorus of Creation. It is My Expression of Praise. My song I sing by day and night, no more in anguish, but as a Hymn of Gratitude. For embarking upon the journey truly is as glorious as arriving at the destination, both of which are ongoing. Breathtaking is the vision of that which surrounds me and what lies ahead. The majesty of the journey is without end. I reach with my arms as I raise my heart, each step forward.
As My Spiritual Journey unfolds, I learn of the miracles that have been placed along the way.
I come to know of a grand design and purpose that cannot be described. It can only be experienced. My Spiritual Journey is a Discovery of Self, for as the horizons ahead are without end, so are the gifts and talents that lie within, including an unconditional love for self.
My Spiritual Journey is a Discovery of Self, as I walk in the presence of those who love me - Friends, Family and HIM. All are present at each turn of the trail - at the depth of each valley and at the height of each summit.
My Spiritual Journey confirms each Trail Marker as a composite of each step taken, each challenge an expression of dependence upon HIM as a source of strength. Each challenge of My Spiritual Journey will become a source of strength, so long as I do not look upon the pain of the past with bitterness. It is then that I may acquire inner-strength to move forward.
My Spiritual Journey is one of Peace and Joy, of Hope Through Trust and Faith in HIM, which transforms moments of fervent prayer to a loftier realm.
My Spiritual Journey is a lifting of voice. Beyond a lifted phrase of mind, it is a supplication of heart.
My Spiritual Journey is an Expression of Desire through Meditation, Supplication, Expression of purpose.
I seek HIM in meek humility. In Gentleness and Tenderness, HE seeks me.
To HIM I pay homage for my abundance — not of earthly riches, but with sincerity in my motivation and intent.
My head bows with heart in submission and sincerity, in motivation and intent.
My soul gains an ability to overcome each obstacle and frailty. To bring My Care and Desire to HIM is to express trust and faith that my sorrow, grief and pain will be accepted as HE accepts me.
My Spiritual Journey becomes as a stone — skipping across the surface of a crystal lake rippling outward to intersect with circles broadening outward, images extending beyond a flat mirror image, reflecting ever upward.
If but for a moment, it leaves its impression by adding to the beauty which surrounds it. My Spiritual Journey is like a circle which broadens, for all are drawn to one another, sharing common awareness of being led by HIM.
My Spiritual Journey extends beyond the length of day, the step ahead, the next horizon, beyond its destination, without end. I travel toward each summit and pass through each meadow having overcome the adversity of the journey, having overcome the depth of each valley and each steep climb.
I rejoice in the beauty, grandeur and splendor that I find along the way, awaiting to partake of the desirable fruits which await me.
I am a part of the cycle of the seasons as each leaf buds, blossoms, begins in its downward descent. Rich in an abundance of color, my days join in a renewal and prelude to that which will come. At the onset of spring, my leaves emerge, bringing about a season of renewal. Small, yet fresh, each leaf makes its imprint upon the skyline, adding to the contour of the path that leads ever onward.
My Spiritual Journey is like each season’s passing — a ritual and progression of Recovery and Healing through HIS Restoration and Renewal. Always are the days of light, the sun claiming itself as conqueror of the sky.Yet, length of days surrender as golden, yellow, red leaves cast themselves upon the forest floor, secluding the pathway, in preparation for winter burial. Through the passage of each season,
My Spiritual Journey leads onward. I am comforted in knowing that I will be led upon the path, though hidden by the depths of snow, which will cover, cleanse and make pure, before the arrival of the following spring. I seek to become as each season, which claims the forest. The leaves and pine needles from each branch and limb adorn the pathway that lies before me. I seek to adorn the same pathway with my offering of praise and a prayer for healing.
I am comforted in knowing that the season of winter one of preparation for the advent of spring and a renewal of life.
I rejoice in each moment as well as in each step taken along the way.
I hunger not for the enticements of desire but for these fruits which offer their abundance and the essence of meaningful living – Fulfillment, Contentment, Serenity.
The days of My Spiritual Journey are as leaves from that tree – each adding its brilliance to the surroundings, if only for a brief season.
My Spiritual Journey becomes like the cycle of the leaves which fall downward, rich in their abundance of color. There is a renewal and yielding to that which is to come at the advent of those leaves which will emerge at the season of renewal – small, yet fresh – making their imprint upon the skyline as the fallen leaves add to the contour of the path that leads ever onward.
With the forest that surrounds me, I raise my spirit, soul and voice in tribute to HIM – raising anthems as the mountains which dwarf the towering pines as a cotton canopy of clouds looms above.
Like those trees that surround me, my spirit is firmly rooted, providing a united strength to one another. Once upstarts themselves, the stalwarts of the community lean and bend, though not yet ready to surrender to the advent of their years. Theirs is to share their secret with the young seedlings and upstarts which have yet to take their full place upon the landscape. The upstarts reach out to the strong and wise among them and to HIM, proclaiming themselves as witnesses of a Grand Design. It is through HIS Abundance, that I partake of HIS Desirable Fruits – not only as a mending and regaining of that which has been lost and what might have been, but also a discovery of what is and what may come.
Other Desirable Fruits await, HE desires to share them, if I seek to come unto HIM. This is my desire...
...to become one with HE whose Healing extends beyond Recovery. .
..It becomes a reflection of who I am, and of what I may become.
...It becomes mine to do the same for others, which Awakening and Discovery has been given to me.

Search & Rescue
(Chaplain Michael L. Benedict)
There was a time when my soul became weary from the burden of isolation. I came to feel a longing for the companionship of family and friends who had once walked at my side. My seclusion began when I made a decision to walk upon another path, thinking that I could arrive at another destination that would be worth pursuing. Emptiness became my companion, when my purpose became as confused as my direction. Desolation surrounded me, for there were no landmarks on which to attach my bearings.
To feel abandoned would only be a partial description of my feelings. For it was foolish pride that led me to believe I could venture out to find something better. It was not a good choice to leave the Good Path and the company of Fellow Travelers who had encouraged me. By turning my back on them and the promise of something to be cherished, my situation became a self-made exile.
My first step from the Good Path was influenced by idle curiosity. Gradually, I gave in to the temptation of exploring something that seemed inviting. I ignored the warnings and signs of caution by taking one step, then another. As I took those first steps, I was unaware of the distance that I had placed between myself and my Fellow Travelers. When I began my departure, my Fellow Travelers called out my name, in an effort to keep me from going astray.
I did not heed their warnings of the dangers that might ensnare me. The further I wandered, the fainter their voices became. The warmth and brightness of a guiding light began to fade when I entered a mist of darkness. Its heaviness became like a heavy shroud that provided no comfort or protection. I found myself standing alone in a barren wilderness that was far from the Good Road that I had walked upon.
I paused to look back toward that path upon on which I had once travelled. I asked myself what had made the strange road so inviting? Why would I depart from a sure course that would lead me to the blessing of HIS promise and the promise of HIS blessing? What was so appealing about a barren, empty wilderness with no sure direction for me to follow? How is it that mine had become a path of aimless wandering, confusion, uncertainty and doubt?
I stood alone in the barren wilderness, pleading aloud for relief and rescue, unsure if anyone would hear or respond. Mine became a voice and moment of despair. I recalled the time when I lifted my voice in a Song Of Praise for the warmth and brightness of that path and for the company of Fellow Travelers. I came to feel a longing for their company. If only my voice could join with theirs in singing the precious songs of rejoicing. I came to feel a desire to walk upon the good path once again, toward a place that was safe and secure.
My spirit became worn from each step that led me away from the Good Road that I once knew. The distance seemed too far for me to ever make my way back. I looked to see a glimmer of light much like that of far distant stars. Because my wandering had brought me to a standstill, exhaustion prevented me from moving toward the light that seemed so distant. Neither could I continue in the direction that I had chosen.
Overwhelmed by my inability to make my way back, I called aloud, hoping my cries for rescue might be heard. I looked toward the glimmering light, which appeared to be coming closer.
My spirit was lifted by what I could hear and see, for the light and singing became familiar. I recognized the familiar song as the one that I sang while in the company of those with whom I once shared my journey. Though I had chosen to leave them behind, my Fellow Travelers had come out in searching for me, that they might become my Rescuers. My cries were faint to them to at first. Their chorus swelled as they came closer to me.
Softly, I joined, my voice with theirs, as I had once before –
‘Always to walk upon the path at the side of cherished ones, with love. Our steps will press united as we worship THE SON above. Uplifting, together, our spirit strong, keeping one another from harm and snares, watching over one another, our burdens shared. Together we will search until the lost are found, that one who has wandered will walk with us once more. We will bring them back to our warm, united path, we travel on a common trail that leads to home at last. If one wanders away from our fold, on an unknown, unsafe course that leads toward the dark and cold, we will go out in search with a rescue light, to save one another from hazard and plight. Together we will search until the lost are found, that the wandering one will walk with us once more. We will bring them back to our warm, united path, for we travel on a common trail that leads to home at last.’
The song became familiar the closer they came. I felt a sense of calm when they arrived. We reunited in song as the glimmering light of their lanterns became brighter.
One of them lit a flame from their lantern, that my lantern might be lit anew. The crippling cold left me when a warm blanket was placed upon my back. I was given a share of their food, the morsel becoming a sacrament of their compassion.
The strains of that once-familiar song and the morsel of food had been brought by those who were prepared to guide me upon the Good Road once more.
We continued to sing together as we had once before. Our steps re-united in a common shared direction. Soon we arrived upon The Good Road from which I had departed. my hand was placed upon a rod of iron that would steady my course and keep me from wandering upon the strange roads which seemed to be inviting.
So was the time that I had wandered from The Good Road, to have been rescued and to have made my way back, with the aid of Fellow Travelers who became my Rescuers.
In time, we came to stand at a tree, the beauty of which is beyond description. Its fruit was delicious. For it was the same fruit I was given at the beginning of my journey and at the time of rescue.
The glowing light that surrounded the tree reminded me of the light that flickered from the distance as I wandered away from the Good Road. It was the same light that rekindled my lantern that
I might see my way back to the straight and narrow path.
I looked into the faces of those who came to bring me back, possibly at their peril. They never judged me. They always looked upon me with tenderness and compassion, with a sincere concern for my well- being. They had left the safety of the Good Road and the company of their loved ones to save me from the perils of wandering.
They had come in search of me that we might share in the joy of arriving at HIS Tree Of Life.
They had been sent to bring me back, that I might walk with them once again. They came in search of me that we might partake of its fruit and rest beneath the protection of its branches.
We rejoiced in the moment of our reunion with each other and with THE ONE who has rescued each of us. There were moments of despair when I felt as if returning to the Good Road would not be possible.
Upon my return to The Good Road and my arrival to this Haven, I came to understand that it is always possible to make a course correction and to find my way back. Having made that discovery,
I became hopeful that nothing would ever draw me away again. I found peace in the assurance that as long as I moved forward with my Fellow Travelers, I would always travel on The Good Road.
I found peace in knowing that my faith and dependence upon HIM would always bring me to a sacred, safe and holy place.
HE gives the Gift of Hope to always stand with HIM and with my Fellow Travelers - never again to wander in the wilderness.
Now I stand at HIS Tree Of Life on this, a day of reflection as well as gratitude. The light that surrounds me is the light that became my beacon of rescue.
The fruit which filled me then is the fruit nourishes me now. The blanket that was placed upon me then is the cloak of warmth that covers me now.
HIS word is the Guiding Rod on which my hand was placed that I might be guided toward HIS presence. Today, I gather with my Rescuers, who have become my Fellow Travelers once again. It is with them that I have found what I had been searching for, even when I thought that I could find it by myself and somewhere else. It is my desire to avoid wandering toward the cold and empty place where I felt despair and emptiness. It is in this moment and place that I experience a complete joy in knowing that I am HIS.
It is HE who sent them to my rescue, with light, fruit and blanket. They are the ones who heard my voice when I was crying from the wilderness. Now, it is mine to become a part of HIS Search And Rescue, that I may assist in bringing other travelers safely home.

Transition
(Chaplain Michael L. Benedict)
The telephone rang at approximately 2 AM, awakening me from much needed sleep. Because I had already put in several very long, difficult days at work, I was let the call go to voice-mail.
But even in the fog of slumber, I could sense the urgency in the sound of the voice from the person who was trying to reach me.
This is what could be referred to in chaplaincy parlance as the ultimate emergency— Death Watch. I drew a deep breath, turned toward the night stand, picked up the receiver and mumbled something that resembled a hello.
I knew who the caller was—a seasoned aide from the mental hospital where I served as Chaplain. She was an senior staff member who had been putting in her own share of long hours since she had been assigned to watch over this patient who had been placed on a ’24-hour watch’ due to his condition.
She had signed on to work extended hours because of a staff shortage on the treatment unit.
Our conversation went something like this…
‘Chaplain, I am so glad you answered the phone. I am sorry to wake you up, but we need you over here right away. How soon before you can come?’
At that point, I was pretty much awake, as was my wife. I responded, What’s going on?’
Our brief conversation continued as Jo responded, ’It’s one of your patients (name with held) . I can’t understand him for sure, but I think he wants the Padre and I don’t have his number. Can you come over and help us track him down?’
I agreed to come to the hospital as soon as I could. I got myself dressed, grabbed a piece of toast and a piece of fruit, got in my car and headed to the treatment unit. When I arrived, the senior staff member pulled me aside and explained that the patient hd been drifting in and out of consciousness and kept asking for a prayer from the Catholic Priest.
I sat at his bedside and began whispering to him, ‘Hey there. It’s me, the Chaplain. I am here to let you know that I am going to get hold of The Padre as soon as I can. It may take me some time, but I want to let you know I am here for you until I can get him to come. Is it alright if I say a prayer for you know until I can get a hold of him?’
The patient nodded. I placed my hand atop of one of his hands and offered a brief request to pray that the patient could hold on until I could make the necessary arrangement for Last Rites to be administered. When I concluded the prayer, I told the patient that I would stay on the unit for as long as he needed me to. He nodded his head and let out a sigh. Jo and I exchanged glances and nodded to one another. I told her that I was going to make a call to The Parish and see if I could at least leave a message with on the answering service. The Padre returned my call about an hour later.
He told me that he was out of down at a Pastoral Retreat, that he would be returning by the end of the following afternoon. He then invited me to download some of the prayers for Last Rites, that I might recite them for Alejandro. The Padre assured me that he would finish the full ordinance upon his arrival. I thanked The Padre for calling me back in the very early hours of the morning. He was gracious in thanking me for calling him.
I returned to the bedside of the patient and explained what I was about to do. I told him that I was going to read some prayers for him, that I would remain with him until The Padre was able to come. Once again, he sighed and mumbled his understanding. The senior staff member closed the door, stood on the opposite side of the bed as I began to read the prayers. Every half hour or so, I repeated the prayers and encouraged him to hold on for a little bit longer.
At 6 PM the following evening, I received a page that The Padre had arrived and was waiting for me to meet him in the lobby. I made my way through the corridors to meet him. Together, we walked toward the treatment unit and into the room where the patient had been laying , his condition and vitals deteriorating rapidly.
The senior staff member stated that the patient did not have much longer to live. While The Padre made the preparations to fully administer Last Rites, I whispered to the patient, ‘The Padre is here now for you. He is going to offer some prayers for you. Then you can be at peace.’
The relief that the patent felt was apparent as his heart rate evened out along with his breathing which had been heavy and erratic since my arrival early the previous morning.
The Padre began the sacred ordinance of The Last Rites. The only sounds in the room were that of the oxygen compressor, the labored breathing of the patient and the voice of The Padre as he began to recite some of the same prayers that he had given me permission to read several hours before. Several of the staff members had gathered in the room, to unite their own prayers with those of The Padre. There was a unity of purpose as well as spirit, which was directed toward the patient and the moment at hand. No pretenses or biases were evident. Just a sweet Unity of Hope, that a patient for whom each of them had cared, would be at peace.
The Padre completed the Last Rites. Those present thanked him for coming, as did Alejandro in a voice that was barely understandable, ‘Gracias Padre.’
The Padre patted the patent on the hand, kissed his forehead and whispered, ’Go home in peace. There is a place for you.’
The two of us made our way back to the main entrance of the building. I offered my thanks, not only for his coming, but for his trust in allowing me to read the appropriate prayers. The Padre responded,
‘Chaplain. Regardless of our difference in faith, our perhaps because of it, at times like this, we are united in our effort to tend to the flock.’ We parted company and I made my way back to the unit, preparing myself both mentally and emotionally to continue my vigil.
I entered the treatment unit, walked toward the entrance of the room.
The senior staff member informed me that the patient had passed on. It was during the five minute walk to send The Padre on his way that Alejandro had embraced his transition to the other side. The senior staff member informed me that his face showed relief and peace as he drew his last breath.
The moment was not only one of Transition. It was a statement of witness, that Faith brings Hope, even in the early hours of a morning when an aide calls a Chaplain, a call that is followed by a call from a Chaplain to a Catholic Priest. The Transition of Faith and Hope came full circle because the purpose of all were united on behalf of ‘one of the flock’ who had been given the dignity he deserved as he prepared to come home to THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

Note: Many of the Reflections Upon Recovery that are found throughout this project have been gathered from patients and clients of inpatient psychiatric hospitals, treatment facilities and residential care centers. In conversations with them, either in group or in private conversations, the question has been asked as to what is to be learned from our experiences. It is from them that I have learned that it is from our experience that we become able to teach one another. I have learned much of Courage and Grace from having watched these individuals as well as my three children, now all grown, as they have faced their struggles head on without running away from them. I admire them, I respect them and I am grateful to have shared the journey with them. All have taught me of grace in the face of struggle.
As My Personal Spiritual Journey begins, I Discover My Individual Value, which is kept alive through an awareness of myself as a person of individual worth.
It is through this awareness that I gain an Empowerment that brings about Independence. It is through Independence that I make Positive Choices.
It is through making Positive Choices that I gain Hope for what may be. It is through Hope that I experience a Vision of HIS Recovery And Healing for me. It is through this Vision, that I experience Healing that brings about Restoration And Renewal.
It is through the Healing of body, mind and soul that I discover the Courage to move forward form this point on. This discovery of Courage enables me to find restitution with Family and Fellow Travelers. For it is through a positive and healthy relationship with Family that anything and everything is possible and achievable.
My Spiritual Journey continues.
I discover Life Needs which give me the Empowerment to place myself in HIS Keeping; Life Values which give me the Independence to — recover that which has been lost, restore the damage that has been done in my life and in the lives of those about me; accept HIS Guiding Presence to aid me in overcoming moments of despair; Spiritual Needs which give me to make Positive Choices, thus making right out of anything that is good and making achievable, everything that is right.
My Spiritual Journey continues.

My Spiritual Journey continues.
I discover the best way to maintain a positive attitude is to focus on the needs of someone else. In time, grieving in the face of affliction will give way to that which will be of comfort. I really do matter because of how very special I am. I have not been forsaken, nor have I been forgotten. People will be grateful for my acceptance of them and my determination is a source of dedication; my kindness is a source of compassion; my compassion is a source of capability.
I discover my capability is my source of determination. My devotion is my source of selflessness. My selflessness is my source of kindness.
I discover that I am a magnificent part of Creation. I discover that my relationships are a valued gift. I discover a real miracle lies within me and I may become in harmony with those persons who are around me.
I discover I may become aware of a power that is greater than myself.
I discover that I may become a Reflection of The Source of Creation; I may become a source of Motivation and Inspiration.
I discover that I may become a peaceful person, a helpful person and a joyful person.
I discover that struggle, trial and opposition are companions one to another as are endurance, victory and celebration.
I discover that a moment of sadness is not of an entire day. For there is the light of a new dawn at morn.
My Spiritual Journey continues.
I Discover there is Empowerment through Healing; there is Independence through Healing; there is Healing through Choice; there is Vision through Choice; there is Courage through Healing ; there is Healing through Family and the Community of Healing, for I am no longer be a stranger or foreigner, but a fellow citizen.

>Discovery Of HIS Love For Me
(Chaplain Michael L. Benedict)
Given through abundance without end, granting rich supply. Charting a course that surpasses one of destiny. Seeking a knowledge of the very best alternatives, following through.
Turning from parts of the past which are painful to remember – looking instead to that which will be difficult and challenging, fulfilling and rewarding.
HE grants me the strength to resist the decay of my soul that I might find an inner-strength to endure.
HE walks with me from one end of Creation to the other. This is HIS Kingdom, the one that awaits me and the one that HE awaits to share with me.
HE gives me a brand new day to begin again when things did not go well during the day that has passed.
HE gives me a brand new day to move forward and to help me from feeling overwhelmed by the demands of what might lie ahead.
I gain inner-strength and peace in knowing that HE will always help me to achieve my very best effort, even if others may not be satisfied with the outcome.
HE comes to me to fill the void that has been created from the loss or absence
of someone who is special.
HE prepares me to share my burden with HIM. HE hears my cry and patiently waits until I am ready to listen to HIS soothing and gentle words.
I stand with Gratitude that HE is willing to walk with me, whatever my previous course might have been. Having given me the very air that I breathe, I send my offering of Praise to HIM, upward toward the sky and heavenward.
I bow and kneel in Adoration, that HE has given me HIS Temples of Nature and Cathedrals of Creation for Worship, Prayer, Reflection, Meditation. Extended through HIS desire that I become complete and whole.
Beyond freedom from captivity, now walking at HIS side. Having an ability to set priorities and goals that are achievable and realistic.
Embracing liberty, accepting responsibility to pursue that which is meaningful.
HE blesses me with Independence.
My Recovery And Healing, Restoration And Renewal become an expression of my Faith, an Affirmation of HIS Enduring Presence.
I accept HIS Sacrifice as a Gift of Independence. I turn the control of my life over to HIM for HIS Divine Guidance and Direction.
I become Independent from the criticism of others, I know that HE is satisfied with my effort to serve HIM. For HE had HIS own critics as well.
I know that the same arms that reach out to gather in all of HIS sheep are the arms that await to draw me in as one of HIS fold.
HE accepts me as a multi-faceted gem that will become smooth and polished. once I have turned my rough edges over to HIM for refinement.
HE refuses to give me some of the things that I ask for. HE waits to bless me with the things that I need and seek. HE gives me the gift of Patience when others have been given the things that I long for.
HE blesses me with the through HIS Presence I gain a sense of the Divinity that HE brings to the depths of my heart, soul and spirit. I ask HIM to guide my thoughts and my Choices and Decisions, Thoughts and Conversations.
HE gives me HIS guidance in helping me to avoid the snare of temptation, regardless of how inviting that snare may appear to be.
I look for HIS help in making the Choice as to why I want face my craving and dependency, my challenges and struggles and begin my Rest and Healing, Restitution and Renewal.
For the Choice to do so cannot be made for me. To do so is a Choice that I must truly make on my own. It is never one that I must make without HIS help, support and HIS belief in me. HE gives me all that I need and will continue to do so.
HE reassures me that my craving and dependency, like my challenges and struggles are not always a matter of Choice. HE is always present to help me fill in the gaps. I invite HIM to help me be at peace when HE shows me that when one part of The Spiritual Journey is about to end, another one is about to begin.
Far more than a dream or wish, the reality of HIS desire. Looking for that which will bring about a kindling of Faith. Accepting HIM as the complete source of Faith and the total fulfillment of Hope. HE seeks to help me in taking a complete inventory of where I am at and how I arrived to a certain point in my craving and dependency as a way of coping with my challenges and struggles.
HIS is the desire to show me the direction that lies ahead. HE assists me in gaining an understanding that denial is not only a failure to recognize the depth of my craving and dependency, my challenges and struggles as well as their causes. It is also a recognition of that which awaits me when I confess my need for HIS intervention and help.
I do not fail, for HE shows me how I may truly overcome my adversity.
I know that HE will never fail me.
HE knows the voice of HIS Children as I recognize the calling of HIS Lambs.
It is through HIM that i have begun to overcome the anger and discord that has cast a shadow upon my Rest and upon my Healing. It is through HIM that I am given the Hope to walk in the brightness of HIS Holy Light.
I experience the warmth of love that falls upon me as I look to see HIM smiling in tenderness, gentleness and understanding. I seek to express My Love For HIM, though it be in a small, humble way. My awareness of HIS Love increases, as does my ability to express. So it is that the circle of an abiding love between us broadens and deepens.
I hold images of HIM in reverence because of what each image represents in my Recovery and Healing. I accept HIS charity through the kindness of others, when shelter and necessities of life have been taken, through HIS compassion. I express humility that when all appears to have been lost or taken, the abundance of HIS charity and concern remains.
I love HIM for sending someone into my life to help me when I have reached bottom of the pit of despair. I learn that Prayerful Confession, Humility and Accountability is not to condemn myself. It is to begin a correction of that which has taken me from HIS Holy Path – to recognize my need for HIS Forgiveness and to take the steps that are necessary to receive it to recognize my need for HIS Mercy as I seek to make Positive Changes that are necessary.
There may be a time when I might deny or be unable to understand the depth and seriousness of my struggle.
However, HE never denies me of HIS Love or of HIS desire to grant me Hope Through Trust and Faith in HIM.
I am warmed in the assurance that that HE is one with me. I am comforted in the experience of becoming one with HIM. Through that comfort and assurance, I am cleansed, purified, healed and uplifted.

>On Bended Knee
(Chaplain Michael L. Benedict)
Sent to save the souls of men, the recovery of soul through HIM.
Battered broken bruised and snared my fragile spirit lost and worn, HIS peace HE brings, HIS peace HE gives to heal my soul, my life once torn. My bleeding calmed, my painful cries, fears dispelled, I am reborn. THE ONE who lifts from all despair, saves me from my worldly cares. Prophets of ages who once foretold , My CREATOR and MASTER I now behold.
I humbly bow on bended knee.
I humbly bow before my KING —
THE HOLY ONE OF ISRAEL; THE SON OF GOD; THE SON OF MAN; EMMANUEL .
I lift my voice and heart to sing, for my salvation HE will bring. GOD’S OWN ANOINTED, BLESSED SON, THE BEGOTTEN LORD, CHRIST, THE HOLY ONE.
In quiet glory comes to Earth – a meek and gentle, holy birth. In a manger bed a child sleeps. Above, Heavenly Angels, their vigil keeps. On High, THE GREAT I AM — with tender mercies as though a lamb. HE comes in love to lead and guide in meadows pastures green, Eternal Life.
HE heals the lame, those once blind, their sight restores. Now I, a lowly feeble soul, come to HIM to be made whole. With loving grace HE now imparts, subdues my trembling, broken heart. Though weary, downcast, darkened eyes, unshackles me with living light.
Sent to save the souls of men, the recovery of soul through HIM. Battered broken bruised and snared my fragile spirit lost and worn HIS peace HE brings, HIS peace HE gives to heal my soul, my life once torn. My bleeding calmed, my painful cries, fears dispelled, I am reborn. THE ONE who lifts from all despair, saves me from my worldly cares. Prophets of ages who once foretold, My CARING, ETERNAL SAVIOR I now behold.
HE raises the dead, restores the deaf, lepers healed, the hungry fed. Unworthy now, I call on HIM. My KING forgives, my blemish cleansed. HE gathers Twelve, an Upper Room. With bread and wine, they sup their groom.
Earnest pleading, HE prays with them.
Will they follow HIM when HE departs?
Against a rock HE comes on bended knee. Gethsemane — HE prays for me, to come to know HIS grace, HIS power to raised me in my darkest hour.
Prophets of ages who once foretold, My CARING , ETERNAL SAVIOR I now behold. To Calvary HE walks alone. My burden HIS, HE journeys on. A wooden cross between two thieves, becomes their grace when they believe.
EMMANUEL is crucified, they pierced HIS heals, wrist HIS side.
Blackened skies, the heavens shake.
All of nature, creation quakes.
I look to see My SAVIOR bleed.
HE cries aloud, ‘Am I forsaken now?’
HIS gentle eyes, look down on me, HIS face though pained, still lined with love.
Sent to die, and live again, HE dies and lives to be My FRIEND. In love, HIS life, HE freely gives. In love my soul, HE freely saves. A single offering of praise, a single hymn to HIM I raise.
I humbly bow on bended knee.
I come before the throne divine, before My PRINCE , My LIVING CHRIST.
HIS life, HIS gift, grateful I, my heart receives. My BLESSED MASTER sets me free. Though once shackled, my voice is raised, my soul lifts now in grateful song. No more alone, my soul belongs.
Sent to save the souls of men, the recovery of soul through HIM
Battered broken bruised and snared my fragile spirit lost and worn. HIS peace HE brings, HIS peace HE gives to heal my soul, my life once torn. My bleeding calmed, my painful cries, fears dispelled, I am reborn.
THE ONE who lifts from all despair, saves me from my worldly cares. Prophets of ages who once foretold, My CREATOR and MASTER I now behold.
THE ONE who lifts from mortal cares will come to save from worldly snares.
I humbly bow on bended knee. I behold CHRIST, THE HEALER whom all ages have foretold.
HIS love, a rebirth of a broken soul. HIS greatest offering, sweetly shared, lifts from my deep despair. My PRECIOUS KING , whom I adore, one blessed day will come once more from heaven above, descend again, to claim HIS throne in the hearts of men.
