I am a new creation.
Like the sun that rises above the crest of a mountain, or the wave which returns to shore, I rise from what has been to leave my mark upon that which is about me. I am a part of that whole – for my part is of worth as my life touches that which is and those who are near me.
Each day, I renew my understanding of the Creation which was made for me and was placed here that I may learn, I am a part of it.
Each day I change – not only by the cycle of nature around me, but through choice as well as circumstance.
I renew my awareness of my potential. I become as Creation is – evolving, full of beauty, yet not quite finished.
Today is like all of my yesterdays and tomorrows – full of a hope that is equal to its challenge and struggle. I rise on this new day with a heart that is full of that hope.
I face my challenges, knowing that each is but of a moment which may bring out the very best that is in me.
My inner strength is like the cycle of creation of which I am a part – limitless, for it is without beginning or end. I carry on through each day with a promise to myself, not forgetting the miracle that is within me.

HYMN TO THE SUN (Zuñi)
I
Early in the morning, We waken, we waken.
When mother Sun-god rises, We welcome her with joy.
She greets us with a radiant face, She meets us with a warm embrace,
So sweetly, so sweetly. Merrily we sing and dance; In happy spirit we advance;
Merrily we sing and dance; In happy spirit we advance.
We are children of the sun, Arm in arm together run,
Round a ring we steady move: Our hearts will faithful prove,
As the sun comes near to us, Near to us, near to us.
Listen! just listen!
II
What a wondrous shower of sounds,
Countless beats in rapid rounds,
Ever changing ever new,
Constant strains of high and low.
They are messengers of love,
Spirit voices from above,
Bringing light and life and joy
Telling us of bliss on high,
Bliss on high! Bliss on high!
Listen! just listen!
III
Whence come all these distant sounds?
Echoes, where the light abounds:
Crystal streams in murmurs faint,
Bursting forth without restraint.
They are golden grains of thought,
Silent whispers faintly caught,
Filling us with joy content,
Pathways of our souls’ ascent,
Souls’ ascent, souls’ ascent.
Listen! just listen!
IV
Glory to the sunlight rays,
Glory to the Sun-god’s ways,
Sunlight rays, Sun-god’s ways.
They command us: to endure,
To be silent, chaste and pure,
To be faithful, true and brave,
To the laws our fathers gave.
O harken to the Sun-god’s voice
Beckoning your soul to rise:
In radiant light, the source of song,
The origin of thought has sprung:
As light and song in one unite,
Let us forever seek the light,
We seek the light, we seek the light.
Listen! just listen!

>Evidence Based Clinical Outcomes
Treatment and Recovery offer what are sometimes known as Evidence Based Clinical Outcomes, which are usually discovered through Clinical Assessments that include specific Baselines (Starting Points), Benchmarks (Goals) and Outcomes, which are measured over a specific period.
Evidence Based Clinical Outcomes
include measurable responses to
Treatment, which are also measured over time intervals: Physical & Biological, Mental & Emotional, Psychological & Psychiatric, to name a few. This can include something as routine as taking Vital Signs & Matrix Based Assessments (blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen level, pulse, blood sugar level, etc.)
Though not measured in the same way as Evidence Based Clinical Outcomes, Spiritual Based Outcomes have a direct impact upon and are influenced by each Benchmark and Outcome, through each
Discipline of Treatment and Recovery (Continuum Of Care).

I am not alone. As I share my challenges and victories with Fellow Travelers, I find strength with them and from them. Together, we look toward the next adventure on The Spiritual Journey.
The Spiritual Journey To RECOVERY extends beyond the length of day, beyond the step ahead, past the next horizon. Footsteps mark their place upon the soft, impressionable array of soil, grass and leaves. That which is marked behind will linger, but only for a while. That which lies ahead is without end as the love of THE GREAT FATHER abides.
The Spiritual Journey is like the love of THE GREAT FATHER - both are without end. The measure of The Spiritual Journey is to partake of fulfillment and contentment as the fruits of meaningful living.
Being honored as one of THE GREAT FATHER, the heart of The Traveler receives a measure of Grace that comes like unto a cloak upon the shoulders, giving warmth unto the spirit, and a covering from the cold. As The Traveler places their steps upon the path once more, rest and replenishment will also remain.
I set aside frustration about the things that have held me back, that I may move on toward a new and exciting adventure, one that will take me to newly discovered peaks and possibilities. I receive positive encouragement and suggestions from those who care about me.
I have the
Empowerment,
Independence,
Choice,
Hope,
Vision,
Healing,
Courage,
Family
to use that guidance as a source of inspiration and motivation to do things in a better way than how I first started.

My GUIDING PRESENCE is...

I will....
>Spiritual Confirmation
extends beyond a
Statement of Belief or a Declaration of Pursuit. It speaks from The Soul and Heart as The Traveler makes their way on The Spiritual Journey. It speaks to what may be, as well as what is. It is an awareness that might be shown as The Traveler passes through valleys and vistas that lie ahead.
With an understanding of the relationship between Spirituality and Recovery, we Discover a Spiritual Confirmation that The Spiritual Journey provides a sure, steady course to walk upon.
The Spiritual Journey becomes one of Self Awareness, Self-Assuredness and Discovery Of Purpose and Potential – which will take The Traveler forward in Treatment and Recovery.
Distance upon The Spiritual Journey is not measured in miles or kilometers. It is an ongoing sojourn that takes The Traveler toward breathtaking summits and vast horizons. There is A Guiding Presence to lead the way, to help The Traveler understand the real purpose of The Spiritual Journey — Discovery Of Creation and the KIVA that lies within. Spiritual Confirmation brings
The Traveler into a Circle with Fellow Travelers who share a Common Vision and Destination. They are drawn together in a united sense of purpose through mutual support and encouragement.

Both root and branch are like The Spirit and like The Destination – extending onward and without end, enduring each and every climb, progressing through each and every season, firmly rooted, ever reaching outward and upward toward THE CREATOR
Each Trail Marker will be a place for reflection, time for meditation and preparation for that which awaits me. I lift my heart, voice and soul in praise to My GREAT FATHER, for HIS never-ending love, for HIS ever-abiding presence, for whom HE desires to teach, to direct desires from the things that are wanted, to helping someone else with the things that they need.
My GREAT FATHER hears my words listens to my desires, that I learn the beauty of compassionate service as a genuine part of Recovery, the richness of sharing my experiences of Healing with someone else who may be struggling, like I once was.
It is by sharing that we lift up one another and walk together, to help someone else by asking them to help me. For both of us have a need to for compassion, that my craving and dependency, my challenges and struggles bring about the turning of my heart away from HIM, to place my heart and vision toward HIM, that I may partake of The Fruit Of HIS Tree Of Life and all that HE desires to give me, that no matter how big of a mess that my life has become because of my craving and dependency, my challenges and struggles — HE is ready to help me sort things out and put things in order.
What My GREAT FATHER sees in me is a reflection of HIS Image, to accept the chance to bear witness of HIS kindness. For by doing so brings a measure of Forgiveness Through HIS Justice and Mercy. To count the battles that I have won as well as the days that I have remained clean and sober.
By doing so, I remain in Recovery and Remission. I am not defined by my weaknesses, but how I overcome them, with HIS help. The extent and depth of my adversity is exceeded and overcome by the depth of HIS desire to cleanse wounds, restore my spirit, raise my soul and renew my life.
My GREAT FATHER would not want me to place myself upon a cross of guilt or shame. HE has done that for me, that I might hold my head up high with a sense of purpose and dignity. That motivation comes from making an ongoing commitment to Recovery.
HIS Love is also ongoing. Sobriety is a only part of Recovery. Forgiveness, Self-inventory, Service, a Relationship with HIM and with others are equal parts as well.
The value of giving up my craving and dependency for something that is better for me and the important people in my life, to place myself in HIS Good Hands when I make the Choice to die in HIM. For HE will take my hardship from me, that a better life can become mine, that HE gives, that I am never alone, that I will never be and that I never have been.
The Empowerment that comes from HIM as I Empower HIM to work miracle in my life, through as to surrender to HIS will for me. I lift my heart, voice and soul in praise to HIM, for HIS never ending love, for HIS ever abiding presence, for all that HE desires to teach me…...that Prayerful Confession, Humility and Accountability are an admission of need for HIM.
HIS Healing and Mercy surpasses the depth of my craving and dependency, my challenges and struggles. The completeness of Healing and Recovery comes from a surrender that is complete and without reservation. HE will Empower me to show trust in myself and in others. For that is when they will come to trust in me. I can come to gain their trust in me as well. For HE is ready to do the same. For a complete surrender will come about when I reach out my arms and heart to HIM.
My GREAT FATHER and I cultivate the Desirable Seed of Restoration. From HIS hand, I taste the Delicious Fruit of Recovery. There is no ground for the Hollow Seed of Failure. Its only yield will be the Sour Fruit of Emptiness.
My GREAT FATHER and I cultivate the Desirable Seed of Happiness. From HIS hand, I taste the Delicious Fruit of Joy. There is no ground for the Hollow Seed of Regret. Its only yield will be the Sour Fruit of Remorse.
It is at The Hand of My GREAT FATHER that My Spiritual Journey becomes one of Recovery and Healing. Through HIS Restoration And Renewal, My Spiritual Journey leads me on a course that is unknown. Still, there is a sense of familiarity, for there is a sense of HIS Guiding Presence.
I know that My GREAT FATHER will always be there when I call for HIM, that HE will call on me, take me in HIS loving arms, restore my need and restore me to HIS fold. HE will bless, heal, restore and watch over me. THE GREAT FATHER is always there to invite me to HIS Orchard, that I may Taste The Better Fruit from HIS Tree Of Life.
I come to The Orchard of
My GREAT FATHER with a sense of HIS abiding presence, assured that HE will watch over me and provide for me. HIS is the same Hand which sustains and guides me on My Spiritual Journey – now, as before and always.

As HE tends to every tree, HE tends my every need through HIS offer of rest, refreshment and reflection. HE invites me to work at HIS side for a time. Together, we nurture fruit that is desirable and delicious. There is no ground for the Hollow Seed of Rage. Its only yield will be the Sour Fruit of Loathing.

I taste The Better Fruit when…
...I seem to have tried to do this all by myself. My GREAT FATHER reminds me that I could have asked for HIS help in the first place, that HE is here now to help me move forward.
...I think about my mortal being becoming separated from my spirit. HE assures me that my spirit still be one with HIS.
...I continue through treatment and recovery. I become united with HIM that I might know of the continued presence of
My GREAT FATHER.

My Spiritual Journey is not meant to be an easy one. Among its purposes are for me to learn to be self-reliant while knowing I can rely on My GREAT FATHER for guidance and protection.
HE travels with me and I know that HE will never turn HIS back on me.
HE is always there to invite me to HIS Orchard once again, that I may continue to taste The Spiritual Fruit from HIS Tree Of Life.
I taste The Spiritual Fruit when…
...I assume the role of primary care giver for a loved one who has lost a degree of independence. I watch as My GREAT FATHER sends miracles through the course of each day — through healing and through generous acts of kindness from others, known and unknown.
...wandering paths take me through majestic canyons, magnificent deserts, inspiring water fronts, inspirational byways and vistas. I kneel at the foot of towering spires of canyon walls adorned with trees, or exquisite chapels of worship. My GREAT FATHER speaks majestically, but without word, for the panorama before me speaks of its praise for HIM. It is to HIM that I offer a prayer of gratitude for HIS presence and for HIS guidance.
I taste The Spiritual Fruit when…
...the pain of age seems to have become my constant companion.
My GREAT FATHER allows me to find a constant presence.
...I watch in celebration and in sorrow, the celebrations and trials of each child.
It is from My GREAT FATHER that I gain a small glimpse of the joy and sadness that HE must feel for each of HIS children.
...I come to see that flirting with a temptation that is influence by my craving and dependency, by my challenges and struggles is a poor means of escaping. I learn that seeking to escape from my struggle has no benefit, but fleeing toward HIM does.
...the hand of fellowship is extended during periods of struggle, change, loss and celebration.
… My GREAT FATHER brings us together to celebrate HIS love for each of HIS children, a celebration that becomes a source of endurance.
...friends and family are at my side to share moments of genuine joy.
I will continue to taste The Better Fruit when…
… My GREAT FATHER has brought us into each other’s lives.
...I start a new chapter in life through a new pursuit or a new endeavor. HE has led me to this point, HE will lead me on.
...I find myself overwhelmed in moments of uncertainty, when I am about to begin something new. My GREAT FATHER places a cloak of assurance upon me, which warms my spirit with determination and confidence.
...I seek Forgiveness from others for wrongs committed. My GREAT FATHER answers prayers for softened hearts.
...overwhelmed by the responsibility of managing affairs of day-to-day life, trying only to make ends meet. HE accepts my offering of substance. In return HE blesses me through the Abundance and Richness of Charity Through HIS Pure Love…
...I search for a portion of HIS Peace. I find that portion which will take root and become as a Tree Of Life that bears a fruit that is delicious and desirable. In arrogance, I demand to know the reason for my adversity. My GREAT FATHER teaches me that Humility is a Spiritual Fruit from HIS Tree Of Life.

Trail of Tears, in U.S. history, the forced relocation during the 1830s of Eastern Woodlands Indians of the Southeast region of the United States (including Cherokee, Creek, Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Seminole, among other nations) to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River. Estimates based on tribal and military records suggest that approximately 100,000 indigenous people were forced from their homes during that period, which is sometimes known as the removal era, and that some 15,000 died during the journey west. The term Trail of Tears invokes the collective suffering those people experienced, although it is most commonly used in reference to the removal experiences of the Southeast Indians generally and the Cherokee nation specifically. The physical trail consisted of several overland routes and one main water route and, by passage of the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act in 2009, stretched some 5,045 miles (about 8,120 km) across portions of nine states (Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Tennessee). Lacee Harris, a spiritual care volunteer at HCI, passed away on August 6, 2020. Born on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation in Fort Duchesne, Utah, Lacee volunteered spiritual support to patients at HCI for several years. He previously served as the University of Utah’s Indian Education Advisor for 14 years and helped design the current U of U logo.
A few HCI team members who knew Lacee remember him with these words.
"I’m deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Lacee Harris. Lacee was such an important advocate for the spiritual and cultural needs of our American Indian patients. I value the many years he gave of his time in order to provide support and comfort to these patients—indeed to all our patients. We will miss his spirit, his sense of humor, and the love and compassion he brought to the HCI community." —Mary Beckerle, CEO, Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah
"It was a great honor to work with Lacee over the years. He shared his sacred spirit freely and valued the spirit of others greatly." —Annie Budhathoki, Acupuncturist, Wellness and Integrative Health Center
"I had the privilege of learning from Lacee Harris in graduate courses and in working with him as he provided care to some of our patients at HCI. His ability to connect with people on a transcendent level, to connect to self and to the earth and spirit, was like no other. He was a healer on many levels and it was a privilege to work with him and be with him when he did his work with others." —Amy Horyna, Manager, Patient and Family Social Workers

"Lacee was a tireless support for our Native patients and families. He shared his humor, wisdom, and spiritual practice openly with patients and families, and they would sometimes page the chaplain again just to tell us about his visit with them. When he and I would talk about how Native patients identified as Episcopalian, Catholic, Christian, and Native, Lacee would say with a twinkle in his eye, ‘Well, my people know it is all one Creation.’ Thank you, Lacee; you have done so much for us. May all Creation welcome you home, and may our gratitude echo to you for all time."
—Rev. John Cooper, Chaplain, Spiritual Care Services
"I will always remember the blessing I received from Lacee at the Blessing of the Hands event at HCI. After the blessing, I felt spiritually lighter and that feeling lasted for a long time. He truly had a gift as a spiritual healer."
—Donna Branson, Director, Patient and Public Education
"Lacee Harris inspired me as a high school student to enter the University of Utah for my undergraduate degree. At that time, he was the advisor for Native American students and assisted us in navigating the university environment. He provided guidance, pep talks, and strategies to help me succeed in my studies. He helped me prepare for the work I did with the Nobel Peace Institute in Oslo, Norway, after 9/11. In my later years as a clinical social worker, he was an example of integrity and clinical and spiritual wealth. I feel blessed to have had him in my life."

"I first met Lacee shortly after I started working at HCI in the fall of 2011. I invited Lacee to be one of the spiritual leaders who took part in a blessing ceremony I was planning for the opening of the hospital expansion. He went above and beyond that request, walking every inch of the new space with me the day before the opening while I offered prayers and he chanted Native blessings. He always liked to welcome folks to his home when he was here, reminding us that the hospital had been built on what had been Ute tribal lands. When we started the annual Blessing of the Hands, Lacee joined the other spiritual care givers in blessing the staff. He was the one whose blessings everyone wanted and there was always a line waiting to be smudged by Lacee’s sage and blessed by his words and spirit on the patio. Even though he had health challenges, he continued to serve HCI where and when he was needed until he went home to his ancestors. His beautiful spirit will be greatly missed in our hospital and in the many other places in the larger community where Lacee was always willing to serve." —Rev. Linda Brewer, Chaplain (Retired)
